Ever since my first encounter with the North, I have been haunted by a vision and a longing to capture the rugged yet delicate beauty of this place. A native of the Madison area, I set my inner compass for due North and eventually landed in Bayfield, where I live year round and experience both the wonders and woes of all four seasons. As a watercolor artist, I work on location, and consciously use my art as a meditative tool to connect deeply with its spirit, immersing myself (sometimes quite literally) in the process. Each painting is an adventure in close observation and becoming familiar with the unique characteristics of each subject and place. This invariably leaves me with a greater and deeper knowledge and appreciation of the natural world and our relationship to it.

One day, while painting on the beach, I dipped out a jar of water and realized that this was some of the most precious, pure, and powerful water on earth…water that so many people work to preserve and protect for future generations. This led me to think more deeply about the medium I use to bring my creative visions to life. Whenever possible, I paint with the water from each place I go, deliberately letting it flow, forming waves, landforms, clouds and skies. While my work is often technically precise and very controlled, this lends an element of unpredictability that often leads to unexpected and delightful results that I can only attribute this to the properties of the water. I merely hold the brush. This is my way of communing, and ultimately my way of communicating my deep love and respect for the power of this place. I hope that viewing my paintings will evoke the same feeling in others, and perhaps inspire them to connect with nature more deeply and express their creativity.

As part of my journey, I earned a B.S. in Art as well as a B.S. in Environmental Studies at UW-Madison and a Masters in Environmental Education from UW-Stevens Point. I find my combined training and experience in all fields enhances and informs my work. As an educator with the University of Wisconsin, Northland College, and as an independent presenter, teacher, and consultant for art, nature, and science integration, I enjoy teaching
